BARNABY BENNETT, TOM GOOCH (New Zealand)
Location:A geothermal park called "Craters of the Moon" located near Taupo in New Zealand.
Extreme Situation:Geothermal Crater; hot, humid, unstable ground, corrosive.
Proposal: A series of steam rooms are created in the hot, humid, unstable grounded and corrosive geotermal crater. The project brief is to respond architecturally to the complex systems and extreme temperatures of a geothermal crater using only site specific data. The extreme nature of this project is offered by the unorthodox approach to design when placing a steam room in an active geothermal crater. The geometry of the rooms is generated by the existing location of fumaroles which is co-dependant on heat & pressure output/dissipation, ground temperature, plant growth and steam room specifications. It is these forms which act as education vessels via experiential learning by locating the user throughout the site to confront visually and physically the harsh environment surrounding them e.g. heat, moisture, corrosion.
