ANNA SCRIMINACI, VALENTINA BONFANTI (Italy)

Location:The desert Sahara, Egypt

Extreme Situation:The desert conditions: strong temperature range (very hot during the day, and particularly cold during the night).

Proposal: An alternative shelter design for nomads and mobile people in the desert. The project is named "Dune" because its shape reminds the sand dunes of the desert. "Dune" is a technological tent for a team of six people and combines the technology used by the Egyptian nomads Tuareg community and the modern technology by using an "active membrane". The "active membrane" is named like this because it provides electricity and maintains always the same temperature inside the tent. The material used for the membrane is a phase change material. It is a combination of salts that heats up when the temperature increases and once reached the melting temperature they start accumulating heat. When the temperature goes down these salts provide heat until are completely discharged.
